Good bye South Dakota - Hello Nebraska

Dear Reader, a blog about the journey, or rather the journey through South Dakota.

We have now been on the road for nearly a month, we have travelled across and through the states of Washington, Oregon, Montana,Wyoming, Idaho and now South Dakota.

They all have a distinct character and for the most part one thing in common. Most of the land is high, we have seldom been below 3000 feet altitude and mostly sparsely populated.  And the people are fantastic, helpful, kind, interested, supportive, welcoming.

Just like our guide, Jim Books

South Dakota  is very beautiful. Somehow the emptiness of the land gives a quality that is hard to describe but gives a closeness to nature.

Stretching through the states is a sea of sand often with massive water reserves underneath.   This is about 400 miles deep and 600 miles across.  It is the high prairie. It is amazing, beautiful, remote, unique and  tranquil.  It is home to a massive range of wildlife both in the air and on the ground and in the rivers.

The sharp eyed will find Cheyenne Crossing on the map of South Dakota, but although the map may show a town the above is all there is to Cheyenne Crossing. Fuel, a small store and some coffee. Yes that's it, just the one building.

We normally pull into RV sites for our stops, if there is one,  this one in Spearfish.

Our neighbours here were family with four boys, it was great to see all their bikes and chairs lined up by size.  The little boy, about three I guess, told me as he went up the steps to the trailer,"...I'm just going to Africa..."  Bless him.

A tiny part of the Crazy Horse sculpting.   This was started in 1955, so far 6,000,000 tons of rock has been blasted and hewn to produce some of what you see.  For more go here

The area was in the thick of gold rush in the late 19 century.

South Dakota is home to Mount Rushmore....But also a huge destination for Americans, this couple were traveling across America on their Harley.  Also on the ride were the woman's parents, yes on their Harley.

What has caused a lot of interest on the blog has been the ghost town of Scenic, look at the previous blog to get the story, but here is more from the town...

Tomorrow we continue through Nebraska

Mileage completed, 1,738 miles.

Have a good week dear viewer and reader.
